During the initial year of internet era, there was shortage of public IP addresses. Hence, private IP addresses like 192.168.1.1 were created. The primary feature of 192.168.1.1 is that it is not globally assigned. In simple words, it is not allocated to any specific organization. Instead it can be used by any organization that needs a private address space.
Usage in Routers
192.168.1.1 was initially used by Linksys Broadband Router, but now it is used in different home networking devices. The main objective is to provide a standardized computing environment where all the users would be able to set up and configure their home or corporate networks quickly and easily. For the usage of this IP address, the approval from the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) is also not required.
Another characteristic feature of 192.168.1.1 is that it is not routable on the public network. In order to connect to the internet, either a proxy server is required or a Network Address Translation (NAT) gateway is needed. For example, several corporate networks for security reasons do not connect directly to the internet. In such instances, a proxy server is used to provide limited internet access to the users.
Common Usage of 192.168.1.1
192.168.1.1 is most commonly used in home networks. In the present day, every home has a desktop, laptop and printer, that is, there are more than one networked devices. However, the Internet Service Provider allocates a single IP address to each customer. With the help of a private IP address all the devices can be interconnected and the internet can also be accessed through NAT. Apart from interconnecting, this private IP address also enhances the security of home or corporate network because the internet host cannot connect directly to the network.
Generally, 192.168.1.1 is used to configure the broadband router as well as to remove all the errors and problems. For accessing this private IP address, you have to type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the web browser and press the enter key. A window will appear in which you will be asked to enter the username and password. Most of the time, both the username and password is 'admin'.
After you enter the correct username and password, another window will open, which will take you to the Home Page of the router. Here you will get several options like LAN Setup, LAN Configuration, WAN Setup, DCP and Modem. With the help of them, you can either configure the router or rectify any error. Once, the router starts to function properly the settings can be saved. If any setting goes wrong, you can select the reset option to restore the default or factory settings.
