How to View Registered DLL Files

The term DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library. It is a small collection, or library as it is called, of executable programs and operations that can be used and utilized by applications of Windows.

Generally, a DLL file can provide numerous functions and facilitating the connections of the program with the particular DLL file needed for a specific operation. Whether the connection or link needed is static or dynamic, DLLs can be accessed by the programs of the operating system. Some of these files also contain data and come with several extensions, such as drv, fon, exe and dll.

DLLs can be used in and by several applications at the same time; most of the DLL files found in a computer come pre installed with the operating system, while others are loaded once an application is installed. In general users who want to view registered DLLs can choose among two basic methods:

Steps to View Registered DLL Files

  1. The first method refers to viewing all files in a computer. Usually the view settings in a PC allow users to view only files that are not hidden, or considered to be system files. Changing this setting allows the user to view all files, including DLLs as well.
  2. The second method you can use in order to view DLLs is to use some software or third party program. Most users choose text file editors or file viewer applications.

Steps to Change View Settings

  1. Go to My computer
  2. Select Tools Menu and go to Folder Options
  3. Select View. If you scroll a little down you will see the option to see hidden files and folders.
  4. Select 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'. Check if the Hide extensions option is selected, and if it is unselect it.
  5. Click OK.

After doing this you should be able to view registered DLL files on the computer using Windows Explorer.

If though you want to use a third party program, you can opt for a text file viewer. There are numerous free viewers online and you can download one if you search on the internet. If you use one of these programs make sure that you don't make any changes in any program or extension, because something like that could cause a serious system or application crash. You should use these programs only to view registered DLLs, without changing or removing anything.
